Press Statement 4/14/25 – Federal Funding for Citizenship Program Terminated

Earlier this year, the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition announced that United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had suddenly frozen $300,000 in funding for citizenship application assistance. While the MIRA Coalition was hopeful that USCIS would reinstate their funding, the federal agency recently notified the organization that the funding was officially cut. In response to this development, MIRA Coalition Executive Director Elizabeth Sweet issued the following statement:

“Making it harder for hundreds of longtime, law-abiding, hard-working Green Card holders to secure U.S. citizenship is unfortunately just the latest in the Trump administration’s long list of anti-immigrant actions. The hundreds of Green Card holders that participated in our citizenship program work tirelessly, pay taxes, and now, are on the cusp of earning the right to vote. Abandoning Green Card holders pursuing U.S. citizenship is a betrayal of the American promise so many of them – and the American people – believe in.”
