Today the MIRA Coalition was pleased to attend the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus’ press unveiling of a pro-immigrant bill, the PROTECT Act (H.D. 5608). Introduced by lead sponsors Caucus Chair Rep. Andy Vargas of Haverhill and Rep. Judith Garcia of Chelsea, the new bill reflects the consensus of the Caucus’ 27 members and incorporates elements of the many immigrant bills currently pending before the Massachusetts State Legislature.
We welcome this important step toward advancing long-overdue protections for immigrant communities in Massachusetts. The PROTECT Act aligns with and builds on MIRA’s legislative priorities by strengthening safeguards in our courts, advancing consistent due process, and ensuring equal protection under the law for all our immigrant communities.
We look forward to working with state legislators to win strong protections for immigrants this legislative session.
