The Massachusetts State Legislative Session Has Paused – What Now?

What Is the August Recess—and Why Does It Matter for You?

Each August, members of the Massachusetts Legislature take a break from the formal lawmaking process on Beacon Hill and return to their home districts. This month-long “August recess” isn’t just a vacation—it’s a time for legislators to reconnect with their communities. They attend local events, meet with constituents, and focus on issues that matter to the people they represent.

In other words, they’re back home and more accessible than usual. And that creates a great opportunity for you to get involved.

How You Can Get Involved During the August Recess

Now is the perfect time to speak directly with your state representative or senator about the issues that matter to you—like immigration. Legislators are likely to be at town halls, community events, or even just around town. Don’t be shy: introduce yourself, thank them for their work, and share what you care about. Once you have identified your state legislator, you may want to go on their website to see upcoming events or be on the lookout for their newsletters.

Two Easy Ways to Take Action

1. Say Thank You—in Person

Last month, Massachusetts legislators approved $5 million in funding for immigration legal services—a big win for immigrant communities. MIRA launched a thank-you email campaign, and now we’re encouraging folks to say thank you in person while your legislator is in town. A simple “thank you” goes a long way.

2. Help Push for the Co-sponsorship of the Immigrant Legal Defense Act

While the funding is a major step forward, we still need the (S.1127/H.1954) Immigrant Legal Defense Act (ILDA) to become law. ILDA would create a permanent statewide program to ensure low-income immigrants at risk of deportation have access to legal representation.

To support this effort, MIRA has launched a co-sponsorship postcard campaign. You can pick up postcards at our office, or we can mail them to you—just let us know! Fill one out and hand it to your legislator the next time you see them. Not sure if your state legislator has co-sponsored ILDA? Click here to view the Senate cosponsors and here to view the House cosponsors.

You can also send an email to your legislator urging them to support this important legislation – you will find a link to do so easily here.

Final Thoughts

The August recess is more than just a break—it’s a powerful moment for grassroots advocacy. Your voice matters, and your legislators want to hear from you. So whether you’re attending a local fair, community meeting, or neighborhood gathering, take a few minutes to connect. You never know how far a conversation can go.
