Policy Updates – 8/13/25

  • Following the Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year against universal injunctions, a federal court in Maryland certified a class-action lawsuit against the administration’s plans to strip birthright citizenship and issued a preliminary injunction blocking the administration action. This is the fourth such decision to be issued by a federal court since the Supreme Court’s decision caused lower courts to re-evaluate the cases under different rules.
  • President Trump is calling for the US census to exclude undocumented immigrants in violation of the clear language of the Constitution. A previous effort by Trump to include a census question on the 2020 census was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2019. The president is also calling for a mid-decade census, something that has never occurred before and which also flies in the face of the plain language of the Constitution.  Expect numerous legal challenges.
