The Career Coach will work with the BEST team to provide a high level of career coaching services, support, job placement, and job retention assistance for clients. This individual may also be assigned to prepare clients for the U.S. citizenship test or to teach computers in order to help people get and retain jobs. The ESL instructor’s primary responsibility will be to teach English contextualized the hospitality industry. This individual may also be assigned to prepare clients for the US citizenship test or to teach computers in order to help people get and retain jobs. Boston International Newcomers Academy (BINcA)

NAIP AmeriCorps Member (2017-2018): Malourdes Duverne

The Career Coach will collaborate with BINcA teachers and staff to provide vocational ESOL, worksite experiences and job coaching to overage Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) to help them prepare for jobs in the United States. The member will coordinate outside of school experiences to introduce SLIFE students to the variety of job options available to them and design classroom lessons to support those experiences. The CEDC NAIP AmeriCorps member will hold 2 cycles of 12 week Vocational ESOL classes that will serve 15 students per cycle for a total of 30 students. The AmeriCorps member will also support 15 students who will receive literacy tutoring from 6 volunteers. The AmeriCorps member will also assist 120 jobseekers, who need Pre-employment services such as job application assistance, resume preparation, and unemployment assistance. The AmeriCorps members will provide job readiness services to low-income, refugee and immigrant participants in JVS’ Refugee Services Program. Will gain knowledge about issues related to resettled refugees and political asylees and be committed to assisting them to obtain economic self-sufficiency through job search and training strategies. The MAPS AmeriCorps NAIP will serve mainly Brazilian and Cape Verdean and other Portuguese speakers in Greater Boston, including Boston (especially Dorchester, Roxbury, Allston and Brighton), Cambridge, and Somerville and surrounding areas such as Everett and Chelsea. This project will primarily serve adults age 18 and over of both genders. The program will be open to anyone who needs the services, so individuals from non-Portuguese-speaking backgrounds can also receive assistance. The Citizenship & employment Assistance Case Worker will work closely with MAPS staff to conduct outreach, and to assist clients with job readiness, including pre-employment services such as job search, resume preparation and job counseling, as well as job skills assessment and placement, including referrals to jot training programs and ESOL services to Portuguese-speaking individuals in the greater Boston area. The citizenship coordinators at MIRA will work closely with staff to provide free N-400 application assistance to eligible LPRs interested in applying for US citizenship. The member will achieve this by coordinating the logistics of MIRA’s in-house and travelling citizenship workshops throughout the year, and by conducting daily pre-screening and follow-up phone calls to clients about their citizenship applications. The member will also provide referral services and manage citizenship volunteers, as needed.

The NAIP ESOL Program Assistant will do direct teaching/assisting lead teachers in 5 classes per week, serving 50-60 students. They will also be preparing support materials/teaching tools for use in the classroom. The will work with NOAH ESOL teaching team to develop lesson plans. They will conduct follow-up information on students regarding why they stopped coming to class (work schedule, moved, changed their mind, etc.) and keep a record. Lastly, they will conduct outreach to connect immigrants/refugees with available resources, especially energy efficiency opportunities and local healthy foods initiatives.
