Background
Public Opinion
Despite a loud and boisterous immigration debate raging across America, recent polls show that the overwhelming majority of Americans view immigrants favorably:
- 67% of adults believe immigrants are good for the country (Gallup, 06/08-25/06).
- 58% of registered voters feel that immigrants contribute more than they take (Fox News, 07/11-12/06)
- 83% of adult Americans believe undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay temporarily or be given citizenship if certain conditions are met (Gallup, 07/08-25/06)
- 65% of registered independents and 58% of registered Republicans support a path to citizenship for “illegal immigrants” (CNN, 05/16-17/06).
- Immigrants today, just like our grandparents and great grandparents, are here to work hard and become citizens. But, the federal government provides few opportunities for legal immigration, and no opportunity for undocumented immigrants to become legal.
- All immigrants – regardless of status – pay sales, property and income taxes.
- All workers and families, immigrants and citizens alike, deserve fair wages and safe working conditions.
- Immigration reform that increases opportunities for legal immigration and allows undocumented immigrants the opportunity to get in line for citizenship is a realistic and responsible policy approach.
Immigration is a complicated topic that strikes an emotional chord with the American public. However, Massachusetts should ignore the call to waste resources chasing after workers with no criminal records, and the temptation to spend political steam on empty and mean-spirited legislation targeting immigrants. Instead, MA should be proud to help all workers achieve their full potential in our commonwealth in a number of ways:
- Invest in workforce development, youth programming and small business assistance throughout our state. Help immigrants become Americans by providing increased access to English classes and citizenship services.
- Ensure that immigrants who work, live and play in Massachusetts – regardless of their status – have access to the rights, protections and services that allow their families to better themselves and Massachusetts.
- Finally, organize meetings and events to discuss immigration so the fire and brimstone of the debate subsides, and the humanity of immigration is reintroduced.
