MIRA Weekly Bulletin

Larger than any one individual, community or organization, thousands of immigrants took to the streets on Monday, March 27th. The opposition is scared.

Our challenge is to sustain and build upon this momentum. Next week, Tuesday April 4th, please join us at our 10th Annual Immigrants Day at the State House where we will hear from many of our gubernatorial candidates. Then, on April 10th, when U.S. Senators return home after debating and voting on immigration reform, we will join hundreds of thousands of immigrants in cities across the country and return to the streets of Boston.

Ali Noorani
Executive Director

  • Over 7,000 Rally in Boston - More to Come!

    Monday, March 27th,

Joining actions across the country, thousands rallied in a peaceful and powerful protest in Boston. Our voices are carrying all the way to Washington! During the march, the Judiciary Committee voted for the Kennedy-McCain bill. This is a great first step! Thank you to all who came to the event, and to all those who called members of the Judiciary. Together, we shall overcome!

SAVE THE DATE! APRIL 10th: National Day of Action!
Stay tuned for more info! Check the MIRA website Friday.

    Action Alert: Call Senator Frist

Even though the Judiciary Committee reached a reasonable bipartisan compromise on an immigration reform bill, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) is trying to bypass the process and force his own enforcement- only bill onto the Senate floor.

    Call Frist's Office!
    D.C. Office: (202) 224-3344
    TN Office: (615) 352-9411

    Tell Sen. Frist:

    • "I oppose Sen. Frist's attempt to bypass the process!"
    • "I want real reform that gives a path to citizenship to the millions of hardworking immigrant families, so that they can become Americans!"

    HELP STOP SENATOR FRIST!

Immigrants' Day at the State House 2006

This coming Tuesday, April 4th is Immigrants' Day at the State House! Come see Gubernatorial candidates Deval Patrick. Christy Mihos, and most of the candidates for Lt. Governor who are all coming to the Immigrants' Day Candidates' Forum. Sign up for buses from your area.
    Get all the details here!

MIRA will also be holding a free advocacy training for Immigrants' Day at the Statehouse participants and others, tomorrow, March 30th from 9:30- 11:30am. Location: Piemont Room, Boston City Hall. Please RSVP to Carly Burton at 617- 350-5480 x208 or mailto:cburton@miracoalition.org

    Access to Health Care

The conference committee is finalizing the health care reform package at the State House and we are anxiously awaiting its arrival. While elderly and disabled legal immigrants will continue to have coverage, 7000 working adults are left in a precarious state. It is crucial that the conferees and leadership hear from the immigrant community and the public about why legal immigrants should be restored to MassHealth. PLEASE CALL THE HEALTH CARE CONFEREES TODAY!

English for Speakers of Other Languages

English language skills are crucial for employment and success for almost every immigrant in MA. A MassINC report and a recent Office of New Bostonians Report concur that increased ESOL services are crucial for Boston and the State.

Please call your legislator to demand proper funding for English for Speakers of Other Languages and Adult Basic Education! (ESOL/ ABE)
