BOSTON — At its June 3rd awards gala, "Give Liberty a Hand," The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Coalition (MIRA) is celebrating the recent achievements of three veteran champions for immigrants and refugees: Scott FitzGerald, Heloisa Galvãoand Senate President Stan Rosenberg.
"We are thrilled to honor these three champions at our annual gala celebration," said MIRA Executive Director Eva Millona. "Each of them deserves recognition for their longstanding achievements in business, the mission-based community, and public service. But they also deserve special recognition for the impact they've made on the lives of over one million foreign-born residents of the Commonwealth."
For more than two decades, Scott FitzGerald has helped clients at the law firm of Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy LLP solve complex immigration needs. But last summer, during the heightened flow of Central American children fleeing violence, Mr. FitzGerald also stepped forward to help establish a pro bono program to provide much needed legal assistance to these young immigrants — Justice AmeriCorps Massachusetts, jointly headed by MIRA and Greater Boston Legal Services. After standing up for equality for nearly 30 years in the State House, Senator Stan Rosenberg was chosen in by his colleagues in 2014 to become the Senate President. In that position, he has already helped to usher in a just and visionary approach to immigrant integration through his leadership on a progressive budget for the coming fiscal year. Meanwhile, Heloisa Galvão has worked everywhere from moving legislation to easing the hardships of countless individual Brazilian immigrant women in Greater Boston through the organization she co-founded, the Brazilian Women's Group, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
"Give Liberty a Hand is a special evening when we celebrate our collective achievements, and honor those who have made an impact in the lives of immigrants and refugees, as well as those who exemplify what it is to be a foreign-born American," Ms. Millona concluded. "We invite members of the press as well as all those who believe in the strength of our state's tremendous diversity to join us at the Fairmont Copley Plaza at six tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 3."
